Expeditionary Learning

Once we started at Lynnhaven School, it was very clear that the educational experience offered here surpassed the typical high school curriculum with just core and elective subjects. My student was climbing rock walls and working in community gardens - something I never thought my video-game loving child would do.

Our students learn at least as much outside the classroom as in it. All of our classes weave expeditionary learning into curricula because we strive to integrate experiences in the natural world and across cultures. Expeditions offer valuable opportunities to practice independence, compassion, and service, as well as broaden students’ education. Hiking, camping, volunteering, collecting data, and team-building are just some ways our students experience learning. These jam-packed experiences give students the chance to take part in fun, hands-on learning, and travel opportunities. The world becomes your classroom and those real-world experiences supplement classroom lessons and contribute to a truly well-rounded education.

Field Trips

Lynnhaven School averages 37 field trips per year. Students may spend the afternoon at the Virginia Fine Arts Museum (VMFA) or explore the Richmond's many trails along the James River. Field trips are part of those essential experiences of a Lynnhaven education!

Voyager

Each year students make their way to new destinations. Travel enables students to step out of their comfort zones and face new challenges as they navigate unfamiliar territories, make decisions, and adapt to different situations. It also brings our students together through teamwork, and shared memories create lasting connections among students.

Camp Lynnhaven

Camp is an experience that every child deserves. This school-wide three-day, two-night experience is the epitome of learning for JOY. Students get a chance to unplug and adventure! From high ropes and zip-lines to canoeing and campfires, Camp Lynnhaven is an annual highlight!
