A Message from the Heads
When a tree grows, it starts with its roots. It grows down and out solidifying its foundation before shooting up toward the sun. Lynnhaven has spent the last ten years growing down and out and we are ready to break through and step into the sunlight. Each student, parent, employee, and supporter has added to our foundation and those individual contributions have become part of something larger. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts generating a shared sense of accomplishment that inspires and lifts us to an ever higher sense of purpose.
Students come here with every part of themselves: with their curiosity, creativity, trepidations, and their dreams. They immerse themselves in authentic learning experiences that span a wide array of academic studies. They experience a place where they can feel safe, validated, and grow comfortable in their own skin. They are guaranteed to be challenged, put in uncomfortable situations, in order that they safely expand their comfort zones and discover their capacity. They are supported by a faculty committed to standing by their side and not in their way. They practice personal expression through the arts, in music, in writing, in exploration, in literature, in calculation, and in culture. They experience schooling as something compassionate and humane. Through the accomplishments of their work, by way of the challenges that were overcome, and in partnership with the relationships they form with each other, they make their education joyful and secure their future.
Each student is valued, seen, and heard. In turn each leaves a lasting and indelible impact on the school. And Lynnhaven grows and solidifies its place in the hearts of its students – forever.

Dr. Johnathan HarrisHead of School - Chief of Advancement Johnathan Harris is entering his tenth year at Lynnhaven School.
Mr. Harris is a native of Bedford County and attended Liberty High School in Bedford, Virginia. He is an alumnus of Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, VA. He completed graduate work at Lynchburg College, Grand Canyon University and Virginia State University, where he received a Master's of Education and Education Specialist Degree. He earned his doctor of education degree in Educational Leadership and Organization Innovation from Marymount University. He founded Lynnhaven School in 2012 due to the mounting frustration he faced as a teacher and administrator in the public school system. A strong advocate for parents desiring a first rate education for their children, Johnathan grew weary of an educational structure in which teachers were not empowered to foster environments of independent and creative learning experiences for each of their students. Upon graduating from Lynchburg, Mr. Harris served within the Lynchburg City Public Schools system as a Teacher's Assistant. After relocating to Richmond, Virginia in the early 2000's, Johnathan was hired as a Reading and Math Teacher for Henrico County Public Schools; he continued his career in education as a Reading Specialist, Principal and a Central Office specialist. Mr. Harris launched Lynnhaven School with one student. The school grew and doubled each year thereafter. Mr. Harris is married to Dr. Courtney Hughes who is the Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Support and Civic Engagement at her alma mater, the University of Richmond. They have one bouncing two year old named Caydence. |
