Minimester
Deep learning doesn't just happen inside the classroom. At Lynnhaven, we celebrate the JOY of learning through two 4-day interdisciplinary, project-based minimesters. What exactly is a minimester course? Short for a miniature semester, these jam-packed classes give students the chance to take part in fun, engaging real-world experiences, hands-on learning, and travel opportunities. A lot can happen in four days! The world becomes your classroom. Minimesters give students the chance to immerse themselves in vigorous, active learning for a short period. Minimester classes are often student-driven based on their expressed interests and curiosities. Faculty and staff also work to engage members of the community to share their gifts and talents with our students. When you return to a regular schedule, your real-world experiences will supplement classroom lessons and contribute to a truly well-rounded education.
Benefits of Minimester Weeks
Find Joy
During the typical school year, students juggle classes, homework, clubs, sports, and other activities. If there's a specific topic that piques your interest, finding the time to explore it can be a challenge. Minimesters give students the chance to forget the million and one things that normally call their attention — and just focus on the joy of learning something new.
Discover the World
There is so much to see and do in the world around us! Minimesters offer students a chance to travel and experience a new perspective. Whether it is wading into the waters of Lynnhaven River restoring oyster beds or spending four days traveling across the state visiting colleges and universities - the world is waiting!
Get Practical!
How many Lynnhaven students does it take to change a light bulb? Just one and they'll know how to install a new fixture too! Practical skills like cooking, sewing, or even knowing how to change your own car oil are needed in today's society. Minimesters are a great way to expand your skills!
Past and Current Classes: Woodworking, Battle Bots, College Excursions, Sewing & Embroidery, Yoga & Mindfulness, Amateur Rocketry, Fishing & Boating, RISK it All (Strategy Board Games), Wide World of Sports, Chopped, Garage Band, Kitchen Boot Camp, Driveway Mechanic, and more!
